I Miei Disegni

Carissimi,
I scanned a couple favorites from my sketchbook and from my first assignment! They're nothing special but I just wanted to give you guys an idea of what I do in my architecture classes.
The sketchbook is pretty basic: plans, elevations, site plans, etc. But it's nice to have some drawings from all over italy!
For our first assignment for our design class we had to analyze Palazzo Gondi in the context of the surrounding area. My main concept was that the heavily rusticated base of the palace has a strong presence on the pedestrian level, in contrast to some of the other more famous buildings (the Bargello and Palazzo Vecchio) which have these huge towers and thus, a vertical presence. The visual value of Pal. Gondi, similar to the Fountain of Neptune, guides the pedestrian through each piazza and acts as a pivot for the main axes that connect some of the monuments of the historic center of Florence.
BORING I know, but even though I'm one of the least experienced people in the class, I felt like I had one of the most original concepts...so I'm pretty proud!

Gondi Analysis
This was my favorite page!

In the top drawing you're seeing the Bargello in the distance and in the second you're standing right next to it. My little map-key is a tad crowded/confusing...

A breakdown of the geometry of the plan. The whole building is pretty much based on a series of 3x3x3m cubes.

Costiera Amalfitana!

Here are the long awaited prints from Positano and Capri (I brought my film camera with me instead of my digital). Such an amazing trip.
Things I unfortunately don't have images of include:
Cliff diving
The blue grotto
Caprese sandwiches (the best ever!)

Como and Mantova

This past weekend we went to Como to look at some modern architecture, and then to Mantova (in english = Mantua). It was an exhausting weekend, we were drawing the whole time and waking up really early! But it was really nice to be there because we were up north so it finally felt like fall.

Como
Lake Como!

The ex-Fascist headquarters and current IRS building

Mantova

The theater where Mozart played his first performance - definitely a highlight.

The gardens at Palazzo Te

More Hilltowns!

Hey guys, so a couple weeks ago I went back to Siena (which I didn't mind, it's one of my favorite cities I've seen so far) and also to San Giminiano. In siena we climbed to the top of the cathedral there, which was a pretty awesome view. In San Giminiano the highlight was definitely going to one of the most famous gelaterias, supposedly "gelato world champions." I have some nice sketches from the trip, hopefully I'll be able to scan them and put them up so you guys can take a look!
I also went to Assisi. It was a very cute little town, but quite strange. It's a pilgramage site because St. Francis is buried there, so there were a lot of people praying and crying.
